Digimon Adventure Wiki

Joe's Battle is the fiftieth episode of Season 1 in Digimon Adventure. Its original title is "女の闘い! レディデビモン", translated as "Catfight! Ladydevimon", "Girls' Battle! LadyDevimon", "Battle Between Women! LadyDevimon", or "Girlfight! LadyDevimon". The episode features Joe and Mimi's arrival at Primary Village and their efforts to gather allies for the fight against Piedmon, as well as Joe's internal conflicts and character development. However, the episode is the most famous for the fierce catfight between Kari's Angewomon and LadyDevimon, beautiful, ruthless and powerful assassin sent by Piedmon to intercept the Digidestined on Spiral Mountain. Ladydevimon wins a brutal, no-holds-barred battle against Angewomon, but just as Ladydevimon is able to finish Angewomon off, the Digidestined comes to Angewomon's rescue, clearing the path to Piedmon. The battle ends up establishing Angewomon-LadyDevimon Rivalry as a mainstay of the Digimon franchise.

Synopsis[]

Joe must find Matt before facing the last of the Dark Masters. Meanwhile, Angewomon, Andromon, MegaKabuterimon, Angemon, Birdramon, and Agumon struggle against the enchanting and powerful LadyDevimon on the top of Spiral Mountain. Will they be able to defeat her and reach Piedmon's observatory?

Plot[]

Mimi, Jou, their partners and the Digimon they had gathered (Orgemon, Meramon, Yukidarumon, Gekomon, and Otamamon) watch as the cities vanish realizing that the others must have defeated Mugendramon leaving only one Dark Master standing. They head towards the top of Spiral Mountain with Orgemon getting annoyed at Yukidarumon and Meramon standing to close to him because of being too cold and hot. Mimi becomes exhausted from the walk so they stop for a break saying she's hungry. Gekomon and Otamamon say they'll get her food. Mimi quickly responds saying she didn't want them to serve her, but they say they just want to make themselves useful. Yukidarumon goes with them. Mimi comments that everyone is being nice and Palmon remarks it's because they like her getting stares from the others. Orgemon and Meramon quickly say they're going to take a nap. Gomamon tells Jou that his face is red, which gets an embarrassed Jou to insist that Gomamon is seeing things. They return with the food and drinks, which Yukidarumon and Meramon are able to cool and cook getting Orgemon to admit that they are useful to have around. They all take a nap and Jou dreams about the conversation he had with Shin about him becoming a doctor. He wakes up and relieves Orgemon from watch duty. He pounders about Shin telling him to find his own path and if Yamato was able to find his own. Elsewhere, Takeru and Hikari mourn the loss of the Numemon that had been killed by Mugendramon and state they'll do their best so the Numemon can be reborn at the Village of Beginnings. From high ground the rest of the chosen and Andromon are able to see Piemon's observatory at the top of Spiral Mountain, though Piemon is also able to see them through the telescope. Piemon remarks that he is glad that they came this far. LadyDevimon volunteers to fight them for him.

Mimi and Jou's group moves on having slept and eaten. Mimi is cheerful but Jou is still depressed. They come across the Village of Beginnings which has been corrupted by the Dark Master's magic. They hear Yamato's harmonica and run to it.

Back with the main group Koushirou wires his laptop to Andromon's sensors and uses it to analyze Spiral Mountain and determine that they are near the top and that the observatory is the Dark Master's base. Andromon then warns them that something is approaching as LadyDevimon introduces herself with a tantalizing laughter. Her bewitching appearance and sardonic demeanor provokes strong dislike and jealousy in Sora and Hikari. Andromon explains that she is one of the Nightmare Soldiers. LadyDevimon remarks that they must be tired so they should lay down and rest, for eternity. She poises to attack and Koromon jumps at her as Taichi evolves him into Agumon who attacks her with Baby Flame but it has no effect and she swats him back to the ground. Patamon, Piyomon and Tentomon evolve to Angemon, Birdramon and Kabuterimon respectively while Gatomon super evolves to Angewomon.

LadyDevimon puts up a tour-de-force performance, simultaneously taking on and dominating six Digimon—two Ultimates (Angewomon and Andromon), three Champions (Angemon, Kabuterimon, and Birdramon), and one rookie (Agumon). She overwhelms Angewomon, Angemon, Kabuterimon, and Birdramon with a single use of her Darkness Wave, knocking back all of them. Andromon prevents LadyDevimon from pressing her advantage by attacking her with Spiral Sword, but LadyDevimon swats aside the attack effortlessly. Kabuterimon and Birdramon follow up with Mega Blaster and Meteor Wing, but she extinguishes the energy blasts with an elegant flick of her wrist, laughing and mocking her assailants. Angemon then attacks with Heaven's Knuckle, which she elegantly sidesteps. However, this leads her right into the path of Angewomon's Holy Arrow, which grazes her side. Growling in annoyance, LadyDevimon flies up to Angewomon and lands a vicious uppercut to Angewomon's chin that knocks the Angel Digimon back. Kabuterimon and Birdramon quickly come to Angewomon's aid by swarming LadyDevimon, but she again swats them aside without so much as a glance.

Agumon declares that he's joining them but Taichi stops him. Agumon insists that he could take her out in his Ultimate form. Taichi has Koushirou look up her data discovering her to be a Perfect level Digimon. Taichi then tells Sora and Takeru to go with Angemon and Birdramon to find Yamato and the others. Sora objects stating that their fighting at the moment but Taichi explains that the rest of their Digimon should be able to take LadyDevimon down. Taichi explains that they don't know when Piemon would show up so he needed them all together. They couldn't afford to fight recklessly as that was what had cost them the Numemon.

Angewomon volunteers to take on LadyDevimon and tells Angemon and Birdramon to leave LadyDevimon to her. However, it soon becomes evident that Angewomon is badly outmatched by LadyDevimon, who seems able to negate any of her weaknesses against Holy Digimon through superior combat skills and strategy. Angewomon fires another Holy Arrow, which LadyDevimon dodges by circling around Angewomon, laughing. Angewomon uses the momentary distraction to tell Angemon and Birdramon to leave LadyDevimon to her and focus on finding Matt, but LadyDevimon immediately land a kick to the small of her back. Angewomon is sent crashing into a cliff, cracking the rock surface and creating a small crater. LadyDevimon laughs mockingly while Angewomon clenches her first and shouts indignantly at LadyDevimon. Angewomon then erupts out of the cliff and delivers a furious uppercut to LadyDevimon's chin. LadyDevimon quickly recovers and counters with a vicious body blow against Angewomon's abdomen. Gasping, Angewomon staggers back, hands balling into fists and teeth clenching as she tries to endure the pain. LadyDevimon taunts Angewomon further by striking up a battle pose with a battlecry of challenge.

Mimi and Jou's group follow harmonica's music to find Elecmon playing it. Elecmon states that now that the Village of Beginnings was in shambles he has no purpose in life. Elecmon asks how Takeru and Patamon were doing and Jou states that they are fine. Mimi asks Elecmon to join them stating that if the Dark Masters were defeated the Village of Beginnings would be restored. He's surprised at the thought of opposing the Dark Masters but after some thought agrees. Jou asks where he got the harmonica from. Elecmon says he found it on the beach. They confirm that it is Yamato's and Elecmon says he saw a swan boat go across the lake the previous night. Jou decides that it is his path to find Yamato and declines the other's offer to join him as it is their path to gather more Digimon.

Back with Taichi's group, LadyDevimon continues to outclass Angewomon, gaining further advantages by taunting Angewomon into a recklessly rushing into combat. LadyDevimon uses her superior agility and reflexes to easily sidestep Angewomon's Holy Arrows, while LadyDevimon's Darkness Wave tears through Angewomon's defenses and leave her tattered. The situation is even worse for Angewomon in hand-to-hand combat, as LadyDevimon is able to easily counter Angeomon's punches with spectacular moves like dropkicks, uppercuts, haymakers, and roundhouse kicks.

While Angewomon busy attempting to resist her attacks, LadyDevimon manages to gain access Angewomon's vulnerable backside. Angewomon is caught unawares and defenseless. However, instead of finishing Angewomon off, LadyDevimon decides to toy with her rival further by yanking the blonde angel's hair, swinging her up into the air, and tossing her around like a rag doll while insulting Angewomon's hairstyle. Angewomon screams in pain, powerless, while LadyDevimon laughs sadistically. Alarmed, Kabuterimon evolves into Atlur Kabuterimon to save Angewomon. With one final, mighty swing, LadyDevimon sends Angewomon hurtling uncontrollably through the air, but Atlur Kabuterimon manages to catch her mid-air.

However, Angewomon angrily snaps at him for saving her, yells at him not to interfere, then flies back at LadyDevimon to engage her in a heated slapping match. Taichi, Koushirou, Agumon and Andromon watch on in shock and Koushirou remarks that women and scary when they get angry, while Hikari angrily cheers on Angewomon, yelling at her to slap LadyDevimon harder.

Ladydevimon defeats Angewomon in the catfight with a devastating roundhouse kick that sends Angewomon plummeting to the ground, where she lands with an impact strong enough to create a crater and send up a billowing mushroom cloud of dust. Ladydevimon proclaims that the game is over and prepares to finish Angewomon off with her Darkness Spear. Stirring feebly and groaning in pain, Angewomon is forced to watch helplessly as Ladydevimon divebombs towards her, ready to impale her.

However, MegaKabuterimon blocks Ladydevimon's Darkness Spear with his hard carapace at the last moment, saving Angewomon's life and breaking Ladydevimon's talons. Furious and unable to accept that her rival had bested her in a one-on-one battle and forced her allies to save her twice, Angewomon again screams at MegaKabuterimon to get out of the way and not interfere. Angewomon then blasts LadyDevimon with Heaven's Charm while Ladydevimon is still distracted from the pain of having her nail broken by Kabuterimon's interception. Ladydevimon is finally defeated, crying out Piedmon's name.

Hikari cheers in victory as Angewomon and Atlur Kabuterimon devolve back to Gatomon and Tentomon. Tentomon then asks Koushirou if there are any marks on his back.

Taichi announces that someone is coming. He looks though his hand-held telescope to confirm that it is Piemon. Agumon warp evolves to War Greymon but Piemon only snickers as he walks casually toward them.
